Any urban shed over 30m² or rural shed over 110m² requires a building consent - but this depends on factors including your property type, zoning, and proximity to boundaries. The rules differ between urban and rural properties - we can guide you through what applies to your situation and help with the consent process.
This depends on your specific address and council district. In some cases a resource consent is required -particularly in areas with heritage overlays, height-to-boundary restrictions, or specific zoning rules. A quick call to your local council with your address will usually answer this. Our team can help you understand what to expect.
Yes. We can assist with the council process and provide all the paperwork you need, including job-specific engineering drawings - usually printed and ready within 15 minutes of your request. If you prefer to manage consent yourself, we'll give you everything required to do so.
Shed pricing varies depending on size, style, complexity, and whether you need installation. A straightforward kitset workshop or garage can start from around $10,000, while larger custom builds - American barns, shed homes, or commercial structures - can range significantly higher. The best way to get an accurate price is to use our Shed Designer App or contact us for a quote.
Our pricing typically covers the the engineered steel frame, cladding, roofing, and components required for your shed. Installation, concrete foundations, and council consent fees are usually quoted separately. We'll be upfront about what's included so there are no surprises.
Steel sheds are low-maintenance by design. Occasional cleaning and inspection of roofing and spouting is recommended, particularly in coastal or high-rainfall areas. We'll advise you on any specific care requirements for your shed type.
Yes - our preferred and standard method is slab first. NZ Steel will void their warranty if wall sheeting is used as formwork at any point during construction, so the slab must be in place before your shed is erected. We can advise on slab specifications for your build.
In some cases, pier foundations are an option - particularly on rural properties or uneven terrain. This depends on your specific design and site conditions. Talk to our team and we'll advise what's appropriate for your build.
Yes. Clear access to the build site, level ground, and your slab being fully cured before installation are all important. We'll walk you through site requirements when you confirm your order so everything is ready on the day.
A kitset shed is supplied as a complete kit of parts for you (or your own builder) to assemble. A full build includes our installation team doing everything from foundation through to the finished structure. We offer both options across our range.
Yes, if you're confident and have the right help. Our kitset sheds are engineered for DIY assembly and come with full instructions. That said, for larger or consent-required structures, we recommend professional installation to ensure compliance and preserve your warranty.
This varies with size and complexity. A standard single or double garage can typically be erected in one to two days. Larger structures such as American barns or commercial buildings will take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe at the time of quoting.
Our sheds are built with high-grade New Zealand steel - heavy-gauge framing and quality steel cladding designed for NZ conditions. We use NZ Steel products across our range and back them with generous material warranties. Steel outperforms timber on durability, maintenance, and longevity.
We provide generous warranties on our sheds. Specific warranty terms depend on the product and cladding type - ask us for details relevant to your build. Note that warranty coverage requires the shed to be installed and maintained in accordance with our guidelines, including slab-first construction.
Yes. We can specify appropriate materials and coatings for coastal environments where salt air exposure is a factor. If your property is within a coastal zone, let us know when enquiring so we can recommend the right product.

Use our shed designer app to start exploring options, or talk to us directly.
We offer a range of roller doors, sliding doors, hinged doors, and personal access doors in various sizes. Window and skylight options are also available. All openings are specified to your requirements at the design stage.
In many cases, yes - our steel frame buildings are designed with future expansion in mind. It's worth discussing this at the design stage so we can engineer the original structure to accommodate additions later.
